Walking into G115 on a Friday afternoon, you’re greeted by the familiar smell of pizza and the buzz of stock market jargon. This is the hub of Prep’s Investment Club, founded in 2022 with a gen- erous gift from Rick Schoeb, ’82. The club exemplifies the idea of “killing two birds with one stone”—it contributes to the school’s endowment while teaching students valuable financial literacy skills.
The club manages real money and invests in a diverse range of stocks, including index funds, growth stocks, and international companies. This unique, student-led initiative is one of the few high school programs in the country that handles actual in- vestments. Students draft detailed memos analyzing companies and their stocks, which then inform future investment decisions.
Recent guest speakers have included Mr. Schoeb and Harrison Goodman, ’24, a former club president, who shared insights and advice with current members. The club’s co-presidents, Rafa Correa, ’25, and Josh DeRusso-Short, ’25, emphasize the club’s accessible and supportive environment. As Rafa points out, “The low level of entry means anyone can join,” making it a serious but stress-free opportunity to learn about investing.
When asked what they’ve gained from the club, Josh shared that he has learned to analyze stock data and evaluate potential invest- ments carefully. This hands-on experience helps students develop fiscal responsibility and understand the balance of risk versus reward. The club’s investments directly sup- port Prep’s financial aid program, putting the Jesuit value of being “Men for Others” into action. As Rafa notes, “I am really grateful to be in the position to be helping kids.”
Josh encourages students to get involved, even if they’re unsure of the specifics, saying, “Pitch a memo” and give it a try. The club is an excellent way to build financial awareness while giving back to the Prep community. In the words of Rafa: “Just show up.” We highly encourage you to take part in this rewarding and educational experience.
