On Wednesday December 4th, Maryland played in one of their biggest tests of the early season against Ohio State. Going into the game they were rolling through their opponents and had a 7-1 record. The question was how they would play in the challenging confer- ence of the Big Ten. Led by Coach Willard, the team was not only up for the task, but ready to dominate. The team came out the gates running with tough defense and even better offense. As a result, the Terrapins took a 50- 17 lead at halftime, which is a remarkable start especially against a solid team in Ohio State. They didn’t stop in the second half and ended up winning 83-59 to improve to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten. Maryland has been led by freshman phenom Derick Queen and guard Jakobi Gillespie, both of whom are newcomers to the team. With new additions like those two, Maryland fans are excited for what they believe could be an extraordinary season.
Chase Willard `26 had this to say about the team so far this year: “We are looking really good so far, our only loss is to an AP Top 10 team in Marquette which was really close. I like all of our depth, and we even have more guys coming back soon. We are looking very good this year especially after losing a guy like Jahmir Young, but with Derick Queen dominating, the team looks great.”After their hot start to the season, the question is when will Maryland become ranked in the AP top 25. With challenging games ahead on the schedule with Big Ten opponents like Purdue, Oregon, and Illinois, Maryland hopefully will be able to prepare themselves for a run in March Madness come spring.
