As the cold weather settles in, we are gearing up for an exciting winter sports season.
The hockey team, led by Coach Danver, is striving to continue success after a strong performance last season. With a mix of experienced seniors, such as Billy ‘Stonewall’ Bass ’25 and Timmy Overcash ’25, and hungry underclassmen, such as Grayson Felizzi ’27 and Braxton Menkiti ’27, they are primed for another competitive season in the Independent School League (ISL). The team is ready to go after beating Churchill 4-0 in their last preseason game.
In addition to the star-studded hockey team, Georgetown Prep basketball looks better than ever. Coached by Mr. Blue, the team has already enjoyed great performances in the pre-season, including a hard-fought loss to St. Johns and a 75-73 Georgetown Prep win against Friendship Tech Prep. Several talented seniors, like Carter Berg-Mclean, committed to Loyola; Tyler Garret, committed to Dartmouth; Patrick McDonough, committed to Army West Point; Dylan Gassaway, committed to Navy; and Akbar Waheed, committed to Boston College. One of the new bright spots in the team is Sinan Huan, ’26, a 7-foot center with offers from the likes of Alabama, Creighton, and more. Expectations for the season are high, and fans have packed the stadiums, eager to watch Prep basketball!
The Swim and Dive Team is looking to continue their amazing success. Georgetown Prep has won the IAC twenty-four years in a row! Andrew Vanas, ’26, and Griffin Oehler, ’27, won Washington Post All-Met Second Team last year. In the National Catholic Swim Championship, Andrew was the 1st seed in the 200 freestyle, and Griffin was the 1st seed in the 200 IM. These swimmers are looking to lead their start-studded team to another IAC Championship!
The wrestling team, led by Coach Bradley, is striving to accomplish great feats. Ten out of the twelve IAC podium placers are returning to the mat, including four IAC Champions, including Constantine Polis, ’26. The captains this year are Nick Aguilar, ’25, and Nate Jacques, ’27. The team is enriched by several freshmen who exhibit great potential and want to make an immediate impact.
